history:

nyx was born and raised in the province of galahd, a island region that was conquered by the empire of niflheim during his childhood. while trying to save his family during the empire's attack, his sister tells him to help their mother instead-- only for him to end up (it's implied) losing them both right before his eyes. his utter helplessness in the face of niflheim's might and his inability to protect the ones he loves left a lasting, permanent mark on him.
as a teenager, nyx was among the many refugees displaced by the war, and ended up being one of the hand-picked few able to wield the lucian king's power to devastating effect, recruited into the kingsglaive. since then, nyx considers himself as one of the fortunate few who were saved by king regis, and has dedicated his life and loyalties to his adopted country lucis and its king.
his survivor's guilt over losing his sister (and mother) consumes him, and sometimes leads to traumatic flashbacks at some pretty inopportune moments. as far as nyx is concerned, maybe he should have died all those years ago protecting his family and ensuring their safety. now, he lives on borrowed time and borrowed magic, and he'll go out in a blaze before he ever allows himself to be powerless again.

personality:

"i'm worth the wait." reckless, confident, and loyal beyond measure, nyx serves the kingsglaive with pride and distinction.
"hero." spoken in admiration or mockery, it's both a nickname and an accurate representation of what nyx does best-- charging in headfirst ready to save the day, bail his comrades out, and kick some ass... and maybe disobey direct orders, land himself in hot water, and make everyone else look bad while he's at it.
"as long as i've got breath in my body." nyx's identity is tied up with being a member of the kingsglaive, and in the power gifted to him by king regis. nyx is nothing if not devoted to the cause, the first into a fray and the last one out, but he's also unpredictable and has a bad habit of flouting orders when lives are on the line, though he'll accept discipline with a minimum of grumbling. pretty much the definition of the dude with the hammer to whom every problem looks like a nail, nyx tends to be direct and straightforward in his actions and thoughts. he's not one to sit on his heels when there's something to be done, acting first and dealing with the consequences later.
off the battlefield, nyx is good humored, sarcastic, and quick to tease, easygoing when it comes to the small stuff and.... a fucking idiot when it comes to the big stuff, terrible at offering reassurance or comfort in the face of tragedy ~~because he's too emotionally constipated~~. after all, if he can't even lay his own decade-old ghosts to rest, how can he help with someone else's?
"my life is nothing." at the core of it, behind his casual front and devil-may-care attitude, nyx doesn't give a single shit about himself or his life. he's not a martyr, and he doesn't have a death wish (although seeing his antics in battle... sometimes it's hard to tell.) he just... isn't too concerned about whether he lives or dies, or what sort of fate befalls him, as long as he goes out fighting in the service of king, country, and duty, preferably taking out as many of those niflheim bastards as he can along the way. the life expectancy of a glaive is already pretty short, but if someone has to take one for the team, nyx is the one champing at the bit to volunteer.
he's also not particularly observant or good at reading people-- mostly because he tends to assume that people think and say what they mean, and have the same dedication to duty as himself. it makes him easy to deceive and manipulate, if you know the right levers to pull. ***KINGSGLAIVE SPOILERS*** before the fall of the crown city of insomnia, he misses all the tell-tale signs of discontent and the mounting bitterness of his fellow glaives, and even the circumstances that lead to his best friend detecting. the end result? a good half of his fellow soldiers betray lucis and his commander turns to have been holding down two full time jobs the whole time-- captain of the lucian kingsglaive AND enemy general of niflheim, who leads the attack that ultimately ends in the murder of the king. nyx, for his part, is fooled into leading the glaives into an ambush, playing on his trust in his fellow soldiers and eagerness to leap into action to mobilize the troops without casting suspicion on the real traitors.***
"for hearth and home." nyx takes to heart the creed of the kingsglaive, in memory of his lost family and for the honor of his new home. even when all hope seems lost and the power of niflheim seems unfathomable, unstoppable, nyx devotes himself, unwavering, to protecting the future.

abilities:

warp-strike. a teleportation ability possessed by lucian royalty. this borrowed power is keyed to his blades; with it, nyx can throw and instantly warp to his kukri, as long as it's within sight. frequently used for aeriel combat, warp-strike is typically accompanied by a burst of light and sparks, a sound like shattering glass, horrible nausea, and jagged glowing "scorch" marks that appear and fade over time. nyx manages to opt out of the horrible nausea part of the program (whether out of natural aptitude or just because he spends so much time teleporting around, it isn't clear.) phase shift. another teleportation ability that allows glaives to shift through short distances (like, a step or five) to dodge attacks and avoid notice.
elemental bullshit. again, borrowed royal magic. members of the kingsglaive are capable of casting several types of magic with their bare hands-- typically bursts of flame and lightning, as well as an icy shield spell that forms in a dome-like curve but can be shattered with enough force. certain glaives (like crowe and an all female squadron that gets shown once and then NEVER AGAIN thank you squeenix) have a stronger affinity for magic and are able to combine their abilities to call down massive firestorms and other great feats of power. PST late afternoon/evening tagger, on the slow-ish side save the occasional boomerang day. i try to average a tag every 1-2 days or so.

i like to write darker threads with charged situations and high potential for conflict, fighting, and action, along with shipping and smut. :3 worldbuilding (AUs or set in a specific canon or generic 'fantasy' or 'sci-fi' settings) is a big plus. don't prefer fluffy or purely domestic scenarios.
